THANKS FOR JOINING HEART AT WORK

Yesterday, we had a great time during the "Heart at Work" Seminar. We've learned a lot from Six Seconds EQ Coach Mr. Bernard Marquez on how our emotions play a big part in productivity and work satisfaction.

Photo Taken from Heart@Work May 17, 2013 – Next run coming soon!

I had the chance to chat with two interesting people too. Joey is a young IT professional who I believe will stumble on something interesting soon. And Ms. Michelle, a teacher by heart, who is currently learning how to operate the construction supply business that her husband started 10 years ago.

What I appreciate is the fact that both of them are eager to improve and grow in what they do. I get encouraged whenever I meet people like them.

We'd like to thank everyone who attended the workshop yesterday. May your quest for learning bring you success.

Our next learning session will be an interesting one entitled "WIN in Your First 30 Days in Sales: Sales Lessons for Non-Sales People." This will be on June 14. If you've been thinking of starting a sales career, but have no clue where to start, this learning session is perfect for you.

HOW LEADERS SUCCEED

Why do you see highly skilled individuals who get promoted to a leadership position end up stressed or miserable? (Even worst, fail.)

And why do you see people who are not as technically proficient succeed in the same position?

Traditional education or schools may have programmed us to be good at doing tasks, but not necessarily good at working well with others.

The people who are more likely to succeed in their industries are the ones who are good at making "emotional connections." Not only are they able to manage their own emotions when it gets tough, but they're also sensitive enough to consider the feelings of others.

And we all like working with people or leaders who are considerate!

With that, my partners and I came up with a learning event or a workshop this May 17 to help you become more "emotionally intelligent."

Featuring one of the top certified EQ coaches in the country, Mr. Bernard Marquez. (under Six Seconds Company) He has done trainings with companies like Citibank, HSBC, Jollibee, Globe, Smart, Unilab, Glaxo and Ayala.

If you're free on May 17, join us. This is a good investment for your personal development. Better yet, bring your officemates with you. I hope I'll get to meet you there.

It's easy to register. Simply click HERE and fill-out the form.

iCHANGE: Winning Disciplines for Change (Bacolod)

It is a privilege and an honor for me to be a part of this learning event in Bacolod happening on September 22, 2012.

I wrote Productive Pinoy as a way to inspire, encourage and equip Pinoys on how they can maximize their talents, showcase their art, or even start the work or business they've been dreaming of. (Start Something!)

In this event, I get to have that opportunity again. We are expecting around 7,000 participants to attend this conference.

The best part is that I get to do it with the people I respect and admire.  (…to be on the same stage with them is a humbling invitation)

Francis Kong is the author of 10 books, a sought-after speaker, and an entrepreneur. The first time I've heard him speak was about 11 years ago. Since then, I've admired his work. Sir Francis has a unique way of bringing out the best in people.

I've met Alex Lacson last year. Sir Alex is a lawyer by profession, but what impressed me was his down to earth personality! His love for our country propelled him to write the national bestseller, '12 Little Things Every Filipino Can Do for his Country.

Ms. Lois Yasay is one of the authors of the Travel Blog – wearesolesisters.com. Together with her Travel Sister Chichi, they left their jobs to travel for six months in Southeast Asia and India. (Now, that's passion!) I'm sure that's an interesting story to hear!

So if you're from Bacolod, or anywhere nearby, I hope you could join us. Please see the contact details by checking out the poster above.

START SOMETHING! Powered by PRODUCTIVE PINOY

It was almost 1:00pm. Our guests were coming in.

Ms. Michelle could've won the early bird award if there was one! It was a pleasure to meet her.

More people were coming in...

Meanwhile...

That's me on your left with my partner, Bob Barcebal. (Spark Learning) We were about to launch the "Start Something" campaign. And just like any "Start", we had no idea how it will turn out. (I know we look calm, but deep inside we were nervous.)

We waited for a few minutes for the other participants to arrive. At this time, everyone looked so serious. Remember when you were in high school and you were asked to go to the principal's office? That's how serious they were.

To break the ice, my partner and host, Bob Barcebal, encouraged everyone to stand up, "Talk to least five people you don't know."

Ms. Aldreanna and Ken

Jay and Mark
Marvin and Ms. Barbie

After the exercise, Bob gave this takeaway, "To succeed in any endeavor, you've got to take the initiative."

Now, we wanted to make sure that everyone was awake the entire event. The Solution...

Chocolates!

Coffee. Not just coffee, but good coffee.

....and Humor!

We take FUN seriously. Like you, we hate boring presentations too!

Now, when Bob introduced me, I thought he was introducing another speaker – the person he was describing was a bit too impressive. I guess that's what friends do. They build you up, then leave you alone on stage!

I shared what it means to be a Productive Pinoy. (... and the story how Angry Birds became the #1 game)

Before that, Mr. Buddy here won a Productive Pinoy book by guessing who quoted this line, "Trabaho lang ito, walang personalan." If you don't know who, be happy, that proves that you're still young.

Shortly after, I asked the participants to do this simple activity. "What's one thing that you've been putting off?" And in the spirit of Draw Something, I asked them to draw it!

Looks like the guys at Logorama is brewing something...

Ms. Hannah, is that a hotel? Hope you can invite us when it opens.

Francis, are you sure about this? We will be first in line when you give away that money!

Alright, it's time to tell someone about it. Go ahead, don't be shy!

Jim and Marvin

Kevin and Ms. Barbie

Ms. Hannah and Ms. Carmen

Everyone seems to enjoy what the others have to say. So, I called for volunteers, "Who wants to share what you're about to Start?"

MoneySwap Marketing Manager Ms. May Shelle told us about "Gadgets Unlimited," an exciting project she's working on. (Ma'am discount ha!)

Krizia wants to become a motivational speaker someday. After hearing her, I'm convinced that she will be one ... maybe sooner than she thinks!

Now, before Adrian becomes a best-selling author, I suggest for you to take advantage of his writing now, visit his blog... Seeker's Portal.

The best is yet to come. I asked three of my friends to tell their story on "How they Started Something"

Malvin Dinlasan told us how he is now living the exciting life. (now a social media consultant)

He concluded with this, "The ACHIEVERS created the bags of chips and television that the SETTLERS munch and watch TV shows all day." (Another memorable quote from him would be something related to "Boy Bawang.") Read Malvin's take here.

This proves that you don't have to be a motivational speaker to inspire people. Rochelle, the blogger behind Hearty's Haven told us her story.

She works for a multinational company. Her boss told her that she needs to improve her writing skills. Instead of being discouraged, she took it as a challenge and decided to start a blog to improve her writing.

She didn't even expect people to read it. Today, Rochelle's blog has 60,000 visits per month. Now, she enjoys writing and meeting new people. Rochelle made us realize that even our weaknesses can become our strengths if we are willing to work at it! (read Rochelle's take here)

Cornel Bongco tells his story on how he started using his Yoyo to share a life-changing message. This unique idea has allowed him to speak to different groups of people and has brought him to many places. (local and international)

We all enjoyed his story, especially when he was talking about the mysterious "kwan!"

It was a fun afternoon.

Maybe more fun than you would think...

Even this guy is thinking ... "Hmmm what business should I start?"

You're never too young or too old to learn!

This young lady told her brother the next day, "Kuya, before you start anything, decide to finish it!" (A point I made during the presentation)

I continued with "How to Achieve Major, Major Goals" and shared the story on how my book idea came to life. "To write a book, learn how to write one page a day."

That's my pretty wife wearing fuchs... What's the spelling again? Ok, pink na lang daw. Alongside our good friends, Kat, Rudyard and Sol, my brother-in-law.

Mr. Buddy wrote a dedication for me. See the left side of the book.

The next two books I signed was addressed to the two Ronalds of Red Ribbon. To avoid confusion, which book belongs to whom, I wrote the same dedication! (Ayos ba, Nalds?)

Nice to meet you, "Ms. Nyc". Yup, that's her name.

It was fun working with Cornel, Rochelle and Malvin. Hindi kompleto 'pag walang group shot. (Sorry, we didn't do any jump shot.)

Special thanks to May (my editor) and Ms. Shawie for helping us during the event! Big thank you to Maan Villanueva for taking our photos!

This was held last June 8, 2012. The Forum, 4th Level of FullyBooked Bonifacio High Street in Taguig City.

We are excited to see our participants start their something. Hope you can join us next time!

CUSTOMER SERVICE is EVERYONE'S JOB

The management of a big corporation invited us to give a presentation in their office.

When we entered their building, the guards demanded for our IDs and pointed to us the location of the office in a rude manner. They failed to address us properly, didn't even look at us in the eye, and used their sticks to tap the table, saying "put your IDs here."

They treated everyone who entered the building this way, as if they were the bosses.

We met the management team and found them all to be courteous and kind. They welcomed us like VIPs.

Here's the funny part, when we asked them about their training needs, the first thing they said was, "Customer Service!"

Customer Service is everyone's job.

Whether it's the people in the frontline (guards, attendants, delivery) or the people in the backroom, (accounting, clerks, cooks, designers, maintenance crew) they all have a contribution to customer satisfaction.

Each person represents the company – possesing the power to "make or break" the company's reputation or brand.

In your organization, make it everyone's job to make your customers happy.

DIFFERENT SALES PITCH FOR DIFFERENT CLIENTS

It was painful for me to watch an insurance//investment agent try to sell to a thankless prospect. I was trying my best to mind my own business, but can't help but notice the two ladies in their 30s sitting near me in Starbucks. They probably went to the same school and met for this transaction.

"At what age would you like to retire?" the agent asked.

The client sipping her Frappuccino as if she didn't hear her. (Maybe she had no plans of retiring.)

"Ok, maybe when you're 60?" The agent smiled.

Without saying any word, the client's facial expression said it all, "What's with the questions?"

The agent took her calculator and started computing – you can feel the awkward silence between them.

"I just want to get it over with", her body language showed while waiting for the agent.

The polite agent continued her routine, and asked more questions. This time medical in nature. She filled out the forms while the client gave her answers – reluctantly.

"Did you ever have asthma?"

"When I was a baby." The client replied.

"Do you still remember what age?"

"Baby nga!" [Client now a bit irritated...]

A few minutes later, I stood up because I had to go. No clue what happened next.

Selling can be a pain. But you can still avoid these unpleasant situations when you alter your approach. Yes, selling is hard, but it can be fun, interesting and rewarding too.

THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF BUYERS

1. For some, 'buying' is a chore
Whenever you need medicines, all you have to do is to go to a drugstore counter with a prescription. As long as the service is quick and accurate, you don't need much pleasantries. The shorter I can get out of the drugstore, the better it is for me.

Many clients prefer that you simply provide what they need. "Just tell me how much to pay, where to sign, and make sure to answer my call in case I need help. No, I'd prefer for you not to explain everything to me right now. Make it hassle free for me today, I'll be happy to do business with you tomorrow or for the long haul."

They want it smooth, quick and straight to the point.

2. While for some, they expect 'buying' to be a great experience.
They want to enjoy the process of buying and to feel good about their decision.

When you're in a car dealership, you don't just point and pick a car. You pick the right color, ask about the engine, and go for a test drive. You take pleasure by smelling the interior of the brand new car in display. It's about the experience.

The Takeaway: Know what your clients prefer. Then approach them in the way they would want you to. Many times it's not just about the obvious. (not just about the price, discounts or added features that you can offer) And the only way to find out is to ask the right questions and to listen intently.

Some may need persuading, while others may have been decided to buy even before you met. (So convincing them further will do no good, but will come out as irritating)

You can provide a 'buying experience' that's smooth or one that's truly memorable.

You don't need to use 'the same sales pitch' to two different clients.

My business partner and Sales Coach, Mr. Bob Barcebal, will conduct another run of "Win in Your First 30 Days in Sales Workshop" this coming Saturday, October 26 @ The Malayan Plaza Hotel. This is ideal for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and sales professionals.

We're glad to witness this learning session into becoming one of the most in-demand sales seminar in Manila. For more details or to register, visit: http://tinyurl.com/winoct26

SELL WITHOUT SELLING

Recently, my partners and I started a new training firm. (We help organizations improve their productivity, bring out their creativity and increase their sales)

Every Friday, we grab some donuts and coffee and discuss ways on how we can run our business effectively.

One of our recent topics was the implementation of our 'Sales calls'.

We've agreed on one main thing – We need to sell 'without really selling'.

Here's what we came up with:

1. Focus on helping people rather than just closing the sale.
You don't want an aggressive or pushy salesman. Somehow, we need to show you (our clients) that we are here to help you – and that we're in it for the long-haul. We know you're smart! – You'll know if someone is just after your business.

This is challenging, but it's the right thing to do for our customers.

2. Respect and value the time of our prospective clients.
How we present our services will show how much we care. A long presentation isn't always better. Our sales call will need to be short, sweet and enriching. We need to design it really well.

[Tip : a superior 1-hour presentation will take at least 30 hours to design]

3. Be generous.
The "old marketing" was about taking from people. But we believe that being generous will pay better – It has always been better to give than to receive.

That's why instead of selling to you right now, we've decided to give first. It may be a free book, a complimentary seat in a seminar, or a preview session – we believe that if we remain generous – sooner or later – it will pay off. (in direct or indirect ways)

In today's economy, organizations who are willing to give freely – will thrive.

4. We need to differentiate our promise.
At the end of the conversation, the question remains...

"Why hire us?"

That's what we intend to answer!

IN THE BUSINESS OF BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN PEOPLE...

Putting up a business is exciting. One of the keys to success is to find something you can do that help others in a big way.

Entrepreneurship is rarely about what you can get as an entrepreneur. The rewards pour in when you see others benefit from what you give or deliver.

After 15 years in business, several talks and consulting work around the country, it is my privilege to partner with Ryan Peralta and Bob Barcebal.

Ryan is the founder of Drumstart, the only certified drum circle facilitator/trainer in the country, and currently the drummer of Rivermaya. While Bob is a dynamic sales coach, facilitator of the 'Pinoy Sales Champ' workshop, and maybe the only person left on earth who think 'sales' is fun!

Together, we form SPARK CONSULTANCY. A training/learning firm geared to improve productivity, inspire creativity and help you increase sales.

*Official Website coming soon. For now, you may get in touch with my (self-proclaimed) good looking business partner…
