10 WAYS TO HONOR GOD AT WORK

1. Be thankful for the work that you do.
You may not have the job or business that you were hoping for. At least, not yet. But could it be that God is still preparing you?

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

2. Be constructive, and don't be a "complainer."
We are all in the business (or jobs) of solving problems. Instead, always think or offer, "How can I help?"

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:16

3. Work as if it was "God's business."
• Arrive on time for work. If you can't be on time, be 10 minutes early. Time and effort translate into results. Be faithful with how you spend every minute or every resource.

• Unless you were hired as a social media manager, limit your social media use during work hours. Focus on the work at hand. See Pr. 28:19

• When God examines your resume, you want him to read "faithful even with the little." That automatically qualifies you to a promotion.

4. Respect your bosses, that is grace at work.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear – Ephesians 4:29

5.  Always be fair, if not, be generous.
Be ready to give more than what is required. See: Proverbs 11:1

6. Maintain healthy relationships with the opposite sex.
Be careful, be considerate and be respectful. See: 1 Cor 7:2

7. Choose to do what is right, over what is the popular.
Live and practice what you've learned from the bible.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Rom 12:2

8. Develop your skill-set.
Prepare, because God will open bigger doors for you.

Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men – Proverbs 22:29

9. Extend the opportunities to others.
You are blessed, so be a blessing. And then, later on, you might just see them bless others as well.

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that hey may have something to share with anyone in need. – Ephesians 4:28

10. Share the Gospel.
As they see how you live, tell others about the amazing things the LORD has done for you!

GET THE RIGHT DETAILS RIGHT

The last few days has been crazy productive. On top of running my real estate company and organizing training events, I've spent most of my time working on my second book. (Title to be announced soon!)

 NEW BOOK COMING SOON!

Here are two lessons I've learned this week:

1. You have to get the right details right.
You'll have to be able to distinguish a detail that matter from one that just slows you down.

If you want to build a product that resonates with people, you will have to get the details that matter right.

When publishing a book, this could mean picking the right colors for the book cover design so your book stands out when displayed on the bookstore shelf. Or it could mean using the right font size and spacing to ensure easy reading.

The point is that you need to find out what matters to the people you are serving.

2. To get the details right, you need to be with the right people.
I'm blessed to be surrounded by partners and friends who are talented, reliable and easy to work with.

For many nights now, I've been exchanging emails with my editor, Ms. May Palacpac. We'd bounce off emails back and forth just to get a single word right. Thanks to my editor. The book is now ready for printing.

I was in the printing/publishing office yesterday to finalize the book cover. Somehow, the printer didn't get the exact color right. Thanks to my graphic designer, Ms. Nix Gamboa, (with Janjan Arcenal) who immediately figured out how to get that detail right.

On separate occasions, two of my friends, BG Hernandez (renowned creative director) and Maan Villanueva (graphic designer) also checked the layout of the book. They pointed out areas for improvement that I wouldn't notice otherwise.

While all of these were happening, my business partners, Bob Barcebal (Pinoy Sales Champ) and Kat Baylon (corp. trainer) took care of the details of the two learning events that we organized for May 2013 – Heart at Work EQ Workshop (May 17) and the book launch. (May 31)

I'm glad to be working with all of them.

You don't have to do your work alone. Whatever you're working on today, surround yourself with the right people.

• • •

By the way, if you don't have a copy of my first book yet, you can read the reviews HERE. PRODUCTIVE PINOY is available at any National Bookstore or FullyBooked Branch. Thanks!

If you find this post helpful, please like or share it too. Thanks!

ENJOY THE WAIT!

You're waiting for your business loan to be approved.

You're waiting for a prospective client to finally say "Yes" to your offer.

You're waiting for your business to take off now that you've done what you could.

Now that you're waiting, you realize that waiting (and not knowing what to expect) is harder than anything.

Getting news that you succeeded calls for a celebration. Getting news that you failed – you can face it, re-strategize and move on. Any answer will, somehow, give you closure.

But waiting?...

Like a test, you'll either pass or fail the waiting game.

Waiting is part of the package. Not only that it reminds you that you're not in control, but you also get to realize the important things in life.

You might as well do something productive and enjoy the wait.

DECODING "LET'S HAVE COFFEE"

You can decode "Let's have coffee" in many ways.

Let's have coffee. Let me help you.

Let's have coffee. Let's do something together.

Let's have coffee. Let me sell something to you.

Let's have coffee. Bye now, hope never to see you.

You'll save a lot of time simply by knowing the difference when someone asks you.

And the next time you tell someone "Let's have coffee," I guess it's fair to tell them what's on your mind too :)

TO SOLVE A RECURRING PROBLEM

To solve a recurring problem, you need to get to the root cause of the problem.

Many times we look at the surface and forget to examine what's underneath it.

You may not have enough money, not because of your income, but as a result of overspending.

You always get complaints from customers, not because of your service people, but because of your company's poorly designed policies.

You're easily bored, not because of your job position, but maybe you're not exploring enough or stretching your potential.

The obvious can be deceiving. When it's recurring, check deeper.

Find the root cause of the problem. That's the only way you'll be able to solve it – permanently.

TREAT IT AS SERIOUS BUSINESS

Having fun in what you do doesn't mean you're not doing "serious business."

This is true for writers, artists, musicians, athletes or anyone who 'seems' to have a much easier job.

As a writer, one of the things that I've learned is that you can't just wait for inspiration. It takes a lot of discipline, planning and hard work to produce quality content and to be heard in this noisy world.

You may have a job that doesn't sound as glamorous, but in whatever you do, have fun, give your best, and treat it as serious business.

MY 14-YEAR OLD SON IS NOW AN ENTREPRENEUR

When Trey was a lot younger, people would ask him "what do you wanna do when you grow up?" With his cute lisp he'd reply, "I yike my dad's work. I yike to be a businessman." That brought joy to me.

Even when Trey was growing up, it was natural for us to talk about business concepts whenever we're together.

Whether it's the food in a restaurant, the feature of a gadget, or the design/flow of a website – Trey and I would always discuss ways on how we can improve a certain product or service. We'd even come up with better ways it can be presented or sold.

This was an exercise we'd always do for fun. But I didn't realize he was really taking it seriously. (Even I didn't expect that he'd become an entrepreneur this early.)

FUNDING HIS FIRST VENTURE
Every time that Trey would get his allowance or receive gifts from us or from his grand parents, he'd put away some money in the bank. The amount can be as little as P200 and to as much as P1,000.

He didn't have a plan where to spend his money. At times, I would even suggest, "why don't you buy a PS3 or an XBox with the money that you've saved?"

Trey would always say "No, it's ok. I'll just wait."

A few months ago, he came up with a business idea – to print his own statement shirts. Coming from the Twitter generation, he would name his brand #HASHTAG.

Trey would regularly bounce off his ideas to his very supportive mom and me. It became a trending topic during dinner.

Until one day, he finally decided to do it.

He told me that he'll use his own money (his savings of P21,000) to fund his business. And at that moment, I knew he was serious.

So he went on to source the raw materials and visited a manufacturer that can bring his designs to life.

His first factory visit

"Design meeting" with supplier/manufacturer

After a week, Trey received the samples and wore the first Hashtag Shirt. That got him really excited about his new business.

HASHTAG Clothing Co. Founder Trey Remulla with his First Shirt

As of this writing or update, he has about 7 shirt designs and has sold over 500 shirts in 4 months time. He has more than tripled his capital. He makes more than what a minimum wage worker earns.

Ever since Trey started his business, he's been asking me a lot of questions. I can see him learning and enjoying it. I'm really proud of him.

I hope this will also encourage you that you're never too young (or never too old) to "Start Something."

4 REASONS WHY YOU HATE MONDAYS

1. You are in the wrong job

2. You are in the right job (or type of work) with the wrong people.

3. You are in the right job with the right people, but somehow, possess a negative attitude towards work. (Ouch!)

4. You don't have any work to do and it's making you miserable!

PLANNING ISN'T DOING

I love planning. It's fun to strategize, to brainstorm or to dream of the million possibilities.

But what if you spend more time planning than doing?

Planning done well will save you a lot of hours. But if done wrong, it will do the opposite... eat all of your precious time!

Planning to travel the world? Book your first flight.

You intend to lose the love handles? Don't just buy "the new rubber shoes" – go run or go to the gym daily.

Don't keep on telling the girl "I plan to marry you." Go. Propose.

While planning is essential, "doing" is still the main point.

Planning isn't doing. Doing is doing.

CAN YOU 'ATTRACT' MONEY?

I don't think you can attract "money."

You can only attract PEOPLE who'd like to work with you, do business with you, or buy from you because ...

1. You're good at what you do.
2. You're easy or fun to work with.
3. You're brand is interesting.

Now, if you want to become (financially) rich, follow the above three and practice good financial management along with it.

Don't ever think that you can 'magnetize' money. Money is earned by delivering something of value – or is a gift out of someone else's generosity.

Many times, getting "rich" has nothing to do with money, but a lot to do about servanthood, discipline and good stewardship.

Beating the Competition!

Many business leaders today equate "winning" to beating the competition. The focus shifts from the customer to dominating the market. The most important person (the customer) becomes a number or a statistic. While employees get exhausted for chasing after unreasonable quotas.

Don't confuse 'winning' with getting ahead of the competition. Instead, look at your customers one by one. Think of ways how to make them happier, satisfied or fanatic. Do this, they'll be the one to help you capture the rest of the market.

The purpose of a business is not to beat the competition. It's to fill a need, solve a problem or make things better for someone.

That's what your customers are paying you to do, not to compete with anybody.

"IT CAN'T BE DONE."

"It can't be done" can be received in two ways. You can accept it as it is – or you can take it as a challenge and make it into the most motivating statement you've ever heard.

When you reach for the skies, the impossible can become possible.

ROADBLOCKS

There are hundreds of reasons why your project or venture won't work once you start. Many things can (and will) probably go wrong. Rarely will it go according to plan.

But that's not the real problem...

The real problem is 'expecting' it to work the first time you try.

People tend to quit the first roadblock they see. If you're facing one right now, don't quit. It simply means that you need an alternate route. Even a simple 'trial and error' can help you find a better way.

As you progress, expect detours.

Remain faithful. You'll get there.

SERVICE LESSON I LEARNED FROM KRISPY KREME

I ordered two blended drinks from the counter. One for me and one for my son. We sat down and started doing our work. (I was working on something and my son was doing his school work)

We waited for our drinks and noticed that it was taking a bit longer than the usual. So, I stood up and politely asked the crew if the orders were ready. They told me they'll make sure to deliver it to my table as soon as it's ready.

After a few minutes, the drinks came along with two donuts.

Me: "I didn't order donuts."

Crew: "I'm sorry sir, your drink came in longer than the usual, the blender malfunctioned a bit. The donuts are for you. Thank you, sir, for waiting."

Me: "Ohhh… Thanks!"

I wasn't complaining. I wasn't even disappointed in any way. And yet, they gave me something to make up for this 'slight delay'. A simple "I'm sorry for keeping you waiting" would've been enough, but they chose to 'delight' me instead.

The typical service business would say, "Ok lang yan, di naman sila nag complain, sabihin mo pasensya na" but Krispy Kreme built generosity into their culture.

The Takeaway for Businesses – Service excellence should be dictated by YOU (the service provider) and not just by your customers. You don't need to wait for a complaint to do something nice for the customer.

8 LESSONS I'VE LEARNED AS AN ENTREPRENEUR

I was invited by the UP Alliance of Economics and Management Students to give a talk on the subject of 'Entrepreneurship'. Among the speakers were Ms. Janina Saspa (a young entrepreneur) and bestselling author, Mr. Chinkee Tan.

We had an awesome time interacting with the students. That's why I thought I'd share the key points of what I talked about to you.

Here are the 8 Lessons That I've Learned as an Entrepreneur:

1. Entrepreneurship is fun.
I didn't dream to become an entrepreneur. I grew up thinking it was something only serious people do.

I was surprised to find out later on that it's really fun to be an entrepreneur. It has changed the way I view "work."

It's fun to help your customers. It's fun to provide jobs. It's fun to be able to use your creativity. It's fun to watch your competitors panic when you've come up with something different.

2. You're never too young to start a business.
I was only 18 when I started my first business. It was a tiny video shop (Remember VHS tapes?) in one corner. I've learned a lot by running that small business. It has played a big part on how I became an entrepreneur.

3. It's not just business, it's personal.
Did you know that Yahoo offered Mark Zuckerburg to buy Facebook for $1 Billion last 2008? Why didn't he sell?

Here's my guess... For Mark Zuckerburg, it's not just business, it's personal.

Putting up a business requires some (if not, a lot of) money. Not only that, it also takes a lot of time and effort to build a business. (you'll come up with creative ideas you wouldn't have thought of if it wasn't your business)

When you consider all of these, "Business isn't just business." It's personal.

4. Dream Big.
As an entrepreneur, you will realize that the 'opportunities' are limitless. The possibilities are endless.

But you shouldn't grab every opportunity that goes your way. Here's how to find out what to pursue – 7 Steps to a Simple Business Plan.

5. Start Small.
The danger with "dreaming big" is the assumption that you need to "start big" as well. This is why only a few people become entrepreneurs. Throughout history, you will find out that many successful entrepreneurs started small.

Did you know that Steve Jobs started Apple in his own garage? While Michael Dell (15th richest man in America) started assembling and selling computers in his college dorm room?

6. It's not just about you or your product, it's about your customers. Change is happening fast. There are products or services that will become outdated. (Like my VHS tapes rental) Businesses will come and go.

At the end of the day, it's not just about you or your product, it's about your customers. You only have a business as long as you have customers who are willing to pay you.

An entrepreneur should always be in tune with what people 'will' want or need.

7. Think differently.
The best time to do "marketing" is not after launching your product, it's before creating it. You can't compete just by reacting to what your competitors are doing. Instead of just competing with price or with more features, find a way to be interesting.

8. Entrepreneurs can contribute to positive change.
By creating jobs, by supporting community projects or causes, or by other means, as an entrepreneur, I'm given the chance to give back to my community.

Entrepreneurship is not just about making money, it's also about making a contribution.

I'll be giving a talk on Entrepreneurship or "Starting a Business" this August 3, Saturday in Ortigas. If you want to put up or grow your business, this will be an interesting learning session for you.

HAAGEN DAZS, MAGNUM or DIRTY ICE CREAM

PRICEY?
Häagen-Dazs is closing shop in the Philippines. They used to have a branch here in Alabang Town Center. I may have bought once or twice, but I can't really remember when. I can't deny though, it's always a treat when your friends bring Haagen Dazs to parties. (Mas masarap 'pag libre!)

After 12 years of operation, Häagen-Dazs probably decided to cut their losses. They found Manila to be a "challenging business environment", according to a company statement.

Too pricey? Maybe. Or maybe it's not really about the price. For the same amount of money, you'll see people copiously buy a Frappuccino in Starbucks or a Smoothie in Jamba Juice; and these businesses are doing remarkably well! (Sometimes, the competition is not necessarily the same product)

THE INTERESTING
Recently, RFM launched Magnum, a premium ice cream. It was interesting enough to create a buzz, an impression, or to get the early adopters curious. Even though it's twice the price of (my favorite) Cornetto Java, that didn't stop Magnum from becoming a bestseller.

What do people really want?

Yes, they want something new, but they want more than that... they want something interesting. Interesting enough to tweet. Interesting enough for your friends to debate on Facebook. Interesting enough for them to 'forget the price' and to give it a try.

With Magnum, RFM has increased its profits by 40% (240M) for the first 5 months of 2012.  [source]

THE NOVELTY
The Sorbetero Ice Cream is a novelty. It has become a part of our culture. The mere sound of the Mamang Sortbero's bell brings back childhood memories. It compels you to tell your side of the story.

For 'The Novelty', it's not so much about the commercial success or how big the business is. It's about making that meaningful connection. (Side note: Remember Hap Chan in Malate when it was still a novelty?)

The Takeaway: For your business, pick one or two ...
1. Keep it fresh.
2. Keep it interesting.
3. Keep it a novelty.

WHY FAILING CAN BE A GOOD REMINDER

After one success after another, failing the next one can be a good reminder.

1. You're not Superman.
You're probably multi-talented. But hey, we all have our limits. The sooner you find out where your boundary lines lie, the earlier you can focus on the work where you can excel or contribute well.

2. There's still so much to learn.
The problem with success is that it tricks you into thinking that you already know everything. "Been there, done that. Now, I can also do that" is an expressway to failure. Guard your heart, remain humble.

3. Success or Failure isn't final.
A failed attempt is just what it is, a failed attempt. You can leave it behind as long as you don't quit. Don't get stuck, move on or try again.

Now, when you succeed again...remember #1 and #2.

IMPROVEMENT OR INNOVATION

As a consultant, I've observed how the word "innovation" is used in organizations. It's an aspiration that you'll always see in the mission and vision statements found in the lobby of their buildings.

Many would like to innovate, yet only a few really do so.

Incremental improvements are good. It's needed, but it isn't innovation. An improvement is a notch better, while innovation is a leap – redefining how things can be done.

The first step to innovation is the willingness to try something else other than what's already working.

Abandon complacency.

Either push the boundaries or work without it.

TWO THINGS MANNY PACQUIAO WON

Photo Credit: Yahoo  / Marsh Starks – Reuters

In his fight with Tim Bradley, Manny Pacquiao may have deserved that belt, but he gained more.

After watching how Manny accepted the judges' decision with grace and self-control, he has earned our respect and admiration.

1. RESPECT
Manny says, "Let's give credit to Bradley. He did well tonight, I respect him, and that's the decision. I respect the officials. … It's part of the game, I give thanks to the Lord."

Manny knew he should've won and yet, he chose to be a gentleman. He could've been mad at the judges or could have blamed someone else. Instead, he gave Bradley his "time to shine" (it didn't last long though) For that, Manny, you've earned our respect.

2. ADMIRATION
As a Christian, it's easy to question God and say, "Why God?!?" Yet, you see a man who is humble before the Lord. Even after a questionable defeat he says, "I give thanks to the Lord."

It's easy to thank God when you're winning. But to thank the Lord at all times? (in this case, losing) That's always easier said than done!

And yet, he did.

I believe that his renewed faith gave him security. He knows that he is not just a title holder – there's more into his identity.

I'm excited to see what's next in the life of this champion.

START SOMETHING! Powered by PRODUCTIVE PINOY

It was almost 1:00pm. Our guests were coming in.

Ms. Michelle could've won the early bird award if there was one! It was a pleasure to meet her.

More people were coming in...

Meanwhile...

That's me on your left with my partner, Bob Barcebal. (Spark Learning) We were about to launch the "Start Something" campaign. And just like any "Start", we had no idea how it will turn out. (I know we look calm, but deep inside we were nervous.)

We waited for a few minutes for the other participants to arrive. At this time, everyone looked so serious. Remember when you were in high school and you were asked to go to the principal's office? That's how serious they were.

To break the ice, my partner and host, Bob Barcebal, encouraged everyone to stand up, "Talk to least five people you don't know."

Ms. Aldreanna and Ken

Jay and Mark
Marvin and Ms. Barbie

After the exercise, Bob gave this takeaway, "To succeed in any endeavor, you've got to take the initiative."

Now, we wanted to make sure that everyone was awake the entire event. The Solution...

Chocolates!

Coffee. Not just coffee, but good coffee.

....and Humor!

We take FUN seriously. Like you, we hate boring presentations too!

Now, when Bob introduced me, I thought he was introducing another speaker – the person he was describing was a bit too impressive. I guess that's what friends do. They build you up, then leave you alone on stage!

I shared what it means to be a Productive Pinoy. (... and the story how Angry Birds became the #1 game)

Before that, Mr. Buddy here won a Productive Pinoy book by guessing who quoted this line, "Trabaho lang ito, walang personalan." If you don't know who, be happy, that proves that you're still young.

Shortly after, I asked the participants to do this simple activity. "What's one thing that you've been putting off?" And in the spirit of Draw Something, I asked them to draw it!

Looks like the guys at Logorama is brewing something...

Ms. Hannah, is that a hotel? Hope you can invite us when it opens.

Francis, are you sure about this? We will be first in line when you give away that money!

Alright, it's time to tell someone about it. Go ahead, don't be shy!

Jim and Marvin

Kevin and Ms. Barbie

Ms. Hannah and Ms. Carmen

Everyone seems to enjoy what the others have to say. So, I called for volunteers, "Who wants to share what you're about to Start?"

MoneySwap Marketing Manager Ms. May Shelle told us about "Gadgets Unlimited," an exciting project she's working on. (Ma'am discount ha!)

Krizia wants to become a motivational speaker someday. After hearing her, I'm convinced that she will be one ... maybe sooner than she thinks!

Now, before Adrian becomes a best-selling author, I suggest for you to take advantage of his writing now, visit his blog... Seeker's Portal.

The best is yet to come. I asked three of my friends to tell their story on "How they Started Something"

Malvin Dinlasan told us how he is now living the exciting life. (now a social media consultant)

He concluded with this, "The ACHIEVERS created the bags of chips and television that the SETTLERS munch and watch TV shows all day." (Another memorable quote from him would be something related to "Boy Bawang.") Read Malvin's take here.

This proves that you don't have to be a motivational speaker to inspire people. Rochelle, the blogger behind Hearty's Haven told us her story.

She works for a multinational company. Her boss told her that she needs to improve her writing skills. Instead of being discouraged, she took it as a challenge and decided to start a blog to improve her writing.

She didn't even expect people to read it. Today, Rochelle's blog has 60,000 visits per month. Now, she enjoys writing and meeting new people. Rochelle made us realize that even our weaknesses can become our strengths if we are willing to work at it! (read Rochelle's take here)

Cornel Bongco tells his story on how he started using his Yoyo to share a life-changing message. This unique idea has allowed him to speak to different groups of people and has brought him to many places. (local and international)

We all enjoyed his story, especially when he was talking about the mysterious "kwan!"

It was a fun afternoon.

Maybe more fun than you would think...

Even this guy is thinking ... "Hmmm what business should I start?"

You're never too young or too old to learn!

This young lady told her brother the next day, "Kuya, before you start anything, decide to finish it!" (A point I made during the presentation)

I continued with "How to Achieve Major, Major Goals" and shared the story on how my book idea came to life. "To write a book, learn how to write one page a day."

That's my pretty wife wearing fuchs... What's the spelling again? Ok, pink na lang daw. Alongside our good friends, Kat, Rudyard and Sol, my brother-in-law.

Mr. Buddy wrote a dedication for me. See the left side of the book.

The next two books I signed was addressed to the two Ronalds of Red Ribbon. To avoid confusion, which book belongs to whom, I wrote the same dedication! (Ayos ba, Nalds?)

Nice to meet you, "Ms. Nyc". Yup, that's her name.

It was fun working with Cornel, Rochelle and Malvin. Hindi kompleto 'pag walang group shot. (Sorry, we didn't do any jump shot.)

Special thanks to May (my editor) and Ms. Shawie for helping us during the event! Big thank you to Maan Villanueva for taking our photos!

This was held last June 8, 2012. The Forum, 4th Level of FullyBooked Bonifacio High Street in Taguig City.

We are excited to see our participants start their something. Hope you can join us next time!
