10 WAYS TO HONOR GOD AT WORK

1. Be thankful for the work that you do.
You may not have the job or business that you were hoping for. At least, not yet. But could it be that God is still preparing you?

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

2. Be constructive, and don't be a "complainer."
We are all in the business (or jobs) of solving problems. Instead, always think or offer, "How can I help?"

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:16

3. Work as if it was "God's business."
• Arrive on time for work. If you can't be on time, be 10 minutes early. Time and effort translate into results. Be faithful with how you spend every minute or every resource.

• Unless you were hired as a social media manager, limit your social media use during work hours. Focus on the work at hand. See Pr. 28:19

• When God examines your resume, you want him to read "faithful even with the little." That automatically qualifies you to a promotion.

4. Respect your bosses, that is grace at work.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear – Ephesians 4:29

5.  Always be fair, if not, be generous.
Be ready to give more than what is required. See: Proverbs 11:1

6. Maintain healthy relationships with the opposite sex.
Be careful, be considerate and be respectful. See: 1 Cor 7:2

7. Choose to do what is right, over what is the popular.
Live and practice what you've learned from the bible.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Rom 12:2

8. Develop your skill-set.
Prepare, because God will open bigger doors for you.

Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men – Proverbs 22:29

9. Extend the opportunities to others.
You are blessed, so be a blessing. And then, later on, you might just see them bless others as well.

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that hey may have something to share with anyone in need. – Ephesians 4:28

10. Share the Gospel.
As they see how you live, tell others about the amazing things the LORD has done for you!

"HELP ME"

When a leader says "Help me." It's not weakness, but a sign of maturity.

Mature leaders know they can't do it by themselves. They are not insecure, but instead, they allow others to fill in, to complement, or even to take charge of tasks they know they can't do themselves.

"Who gets the credit?"

It doesn't matter. Good leaders are purpose-driven, not popularity-driven. In fact, they are prone to make unpopular choices or decisions all the time.

I'm privileged to have known two men who do this well. They're both leaders in their own field or calling. And this September, it's an honor for me to speak with them.

If you're free this coming September 14, I hope you could join us too. For sure this will be fun! More details here: http://tinyurl.com/jumpstartevent

Ang Reklamador

Giving out criticism isn't a good way to spend your time, nor should it be your way of life.

If you need to criticize, make sure it's to build up, to improve or to give new courage to someone. (or else you're just complaining or ranting)

And for you to be able to do that, you need to be a respectable model of what you're talking about. Yes, everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but many times the wisest thing to do is to keep it to yourself, and learn from the situation. (unless you're asked)

It's easy to point out a mistake. We are all good at that, but I would suggest, focus on the solution. Better yet, do something.

Besides, that's what you're there for.

Dreaming and Working

"Dreaming" and "Working."

Many confuse one for the other. Some are just dreaming when they should be working. While others are just working when they should be dreaming!

Nothing great has been done with just a mere pep talk. If you have a big dream, go and work for it. It takes more work (rather than talk) to make things happen.

ALL GOOD IDEAS AREN'T TAKEN

It's when you stop looking, experimenting or risking (even attempting) that you run dry of good ideas.

All good ideas aren't taken.

Don't let this thinking stop you from doing great work.

RE-EVALUATE YOUR PRIORITIES

Ask me what my priorities were 10 years ago, my answer will be a lot different from my priorities today.

10 years ago, my eldest son was just for 4 years old while my second is just newly born. I have two kids then. Now I have three. My family has grown bigger. It seems that we are done with milk and diapers. Now I am thinking of how to pay for their college education.

Ask me what my business goals were a decade ago, you'll also find out that it's also very different from my goals today. I was more aggressive then, I'm a bit more conservative now. The ups and downs I went thru in business (and in life) has thought me well how to move both in faith and in wisdom.

Our priorities will change over time. What mattered to you before, may not be the same thing that matters to you today.

Your responsibilities will become broader. Eventually, your perspective will shift from short-term to long-term.The stakes will always change.

You can't live today with the same thinking you had 10 years ago. Somehow, you need to re-evaluate where you stand. You need to re-examine the way you do things. You need to find out what really matters to you today.

Keep in mind:

1. Re-evaluate your priorities.

2. Focus on what matters today.

3. Commit to continuous improvement.

TWO WORDS FOR A BLESSED YEAR

1. SEEK
"Seek" is a proactive word. It means to "attempt to find" or "to attempt to obtain or achieve."

Many times we don't seek (or attempt) because we are afraid that we won't find anything.

The good news is that if you seek, you will find. But you have to look in the right direction. Contrary to many beliefs, we are not in control of our own lives. We need to seek the One who is.

We may not even know what's best for us, but God surely knows.

2. RESPOND
Many people make a 'wish list' and hope that their dreams/goals in life will just come to pass. That's hardly how things work. God isn't a genie in a lamp.

You need to respond to His will. It may be risky. It may look impossible. It may not even make sense. But with faith, you can believe.

But don't stop there. You'll also need to take action. You need to believe not only that He will grant favor upon you, but that He will also enable you. (No matter how challenging the task seems.)

Stop waiting and start seeking.

Don't worry, you'll know it when it's time to respond.

8 WAYS TO START A PRODUCTIVE YEAR

1. Pause, look back and be thankful.
For some of us, 2012 has been a great year, while for others it has been a challenge. One thing is common though, there's always something that we can be thankful for.

That may be a good thought, but to see its real value, get a piece of paper and list down what you're thankful for. You'll be surprised how much there is to thank God for.

2. Get over the holidays!
I'm sure you had a great feast or celebration, but you can't keep on eating (and spending) the same way. Get over it and move on. Begin to shift your focus to the brighter days ahead.

3. Set your action plan for the first quarter.
Why first quarter? Why not for the whole year? It's because there's a big possibility that your plans for the rest of the year may still change.

Last January 2012, I had something else in mind for our business. But something (an unexpected breakthrough) happened last April that has changed our priorities and direction. Sticking to the old plan didn't make sense anymore.

Plan for the doable, but always leave room in case you need to change course.

4. Think (and work) long-term.
Your goals won't get done overnight. While working on it, you will experience laziness, resistance or set backs. Acknowledge these challenges before you start. Then "commit to finish" whatever it is that you want to achieve.

Don't quit too early. Give yourself enough time to succeed.

5. Say NO to old activities that waste your time.
Instead of watching TV or Facebooking for three hours, (ouch) cut it to an hour. Make use of the two hours that you've shaved doing that "something" you want to do. Stop putting it off!

You can write the book that has been in your mind for the longest time.

You can pursue your art and learn how to showcase it.

You can jumpstart the business that you've been thinking about.

6. If you want to change something, change where you spend your time.

You won't lose weight if you're always in front of the TV.

You won't be able to save money if you're always in the mall.

You won't be able to start a business if you're always with negatrons. (negative people)

A big part of changing your habits is changing where you spend your time.

7. Update your "Operating System"
What worked for you yesterday, may not work tomorrow. In fact, whatever didn't work last year may be caused by the same reason.

Just like your iPhone, you'll need to update your 'operating system' regularly. Though you may not see it, we're driven by the systems that we've designed for ourselves. It's the reason why the first thing that you do when you wake up in the morning is brush your teeth.

A simple change in your 'systems' can help influence your behavior.

By leaving your credit card at home, you're not able to swipe it easily. You avoid debt, without even struggling for self-control.

Or maybe you've been wanting to read your bible at night but haven't been able to. You go home 'too tired' at night or (insert excuse here). What to do? You can wake up earlier than usual. Read it in the morning instead. In this way, you'll get wisdom that you can use for the day.

By changing your systems, you're able to do the things that you want to do, and avoid the things that you shouldn't do.

8. Nurture your relationships.
At the end of the day, it's your relationships that matter. The best reason to get better at what you do is to be able to make a difference in your community or the people you care about. But don't let your 'busyness' affect your time with them.

Plan for a one to one time with your kid.

Schedule a regular date with your wife or husband.

Host occasional dinners in your home with good friends.

If you want to be successful, wealthy or influential. (in a good way) You don't need to look far. The best place to start is in your own roof or circle.

Have a Productive New Year!

MY 14-YEAR OLD SON IS NOW AN ENTREPRENEUR

When Trey was a lot younger, people would ask him "what do you wanna do when you grow up?" With his cute lisp he'd reply, "I yike my dad's work. I yike to be a businessman." That brought joy to me.

Even when Trey was growing up, it was natural for us to talk about business concepts whenever we're together.

Whether it's the food in a restaurant, the feature of a gadget, or the design/flow of a website – Trey and I would always discuss ways on how we can improve a certain product or service. We'd even come up with better ways it can be presented or sold.

This was an exercise we'd always do for fun. But I didn't realize he was really taking it seriously. (Even I didn't expect that he'd become an entrepreneur this early.)

FUNDING HIS FIRST VENTURE
Every time that Trey would get his allowance or receive gifts from us or from his grand parents, he'd put away some money in the bank. The amount can be as little as P200 and to as much as P1,000.

He didn't have a plan where to spend his money. At times, I would even suggest, "why don't you buy a PS3 or an XBox with the money that you've saved?"

Trey would always say "No, it's ok. I'll just wait."

A few months ago, he came up with a business idea – to print his own statement shirts. Coming from the Twitter generation, he would name his brand #HASHTAG.

Trey would regularly bounce off his ideas to his very supportive mom and me. It became a trending topic during dinner.

Until one day, he finally decided to do it.

He told me that he'll use his own money (his savings of P21,000) to fund his business. And at that moment, I knew he was serious.

So he went on to source the raw materials and visited a manufacturer that can bring his designs to life.

His first factory visit

"Design meeting" with supplier/manufacturer

After a week, Trey received the samples and wore the first Hashtag Shirt. That got him really excited about his new business.

HASHTAG Clothing Co. Founder Trey Remulla with his First Shirt

As of this writing or update, he has about 7 shirt designs and has sold over 500 shirts in 4 months time. He has more than tripled his capital. He makes more than what a minimum wage worker earns.

I hope this will also encourage you that you're never too young (or never too old) to "Start Something."

4 REASONS WHY YOU HATE MONDAYS

1. You are in the wrong job

2. You are in the right job (or type of work) with the wrong people.

3. You are in the right job with the right people, but somehow, possess a negative attitude towards work. (Ouch!)

4. You don't have any work to do and it's making you miserable!

"IT CAN'T BE DONE."

"It can't be done" can be received in two ways. You can accept it as it is – or you can take it as a challenge and make it into the most motivating statement you've ever heard.

When you reach for the skies, the impossible can become possible.

START SOMETHING! Powered by PRODUCTIVE PINOY

It was almost 1:00pm. Our guests were coming in.

Ms. Michelle could've won the early bird award if there was one! It was a pleasure to meet her.

More people were coming in...

Meanwhile...

That's me on your left with my partner, Bob Barcebal. (Spark Learning) We were about to launch the "Start Something" campaign. And just like any "Start", we had no idea how it will turn out. (I know we look calm, but deep inside we were nervous.)

We waited for a few minutes for the other participants to arrive. At this time, everyone looked so serious. Remember when you were in high school and you were asked to go to the principal's office? That's how serious they were.

To break the ice, my partner and host, Bob Barcebal, encouraged everyone to stand up, "Talk to least five people you don't know."

Ms. Aldreanna and Ken

Jay and Mark
Marvin and Ms. Barbie

After the exercise, Bob gave this takeaway, "To succeed in any endeavor, you've got to take the initiative."

Now, we wanted to make sure that everyone was awake the entire event. The Solution...

Chocolates!

Coffee. Not just coffee, but good coffee.

....and Humor!

We take FUN seriously. Like you, we hate boring presentations too!

Now, when Bob introduced me, I thought he was introducing another speaker – the person he was describing was a bit too impressive. I guess that's what friends do. They build you up, then leave you alone on stage!

I shared what it means to be a Productive Pinoy. (... and the story how Angry Birds became the #1 game)

Before that, Mr. Buddy here won a Productive Pinoy book by guessing who quoted this line, "Trabaho lang ito, walang personalan." If you don't know who, be happy, that proves that you're still young.

Shortly after, I asked the participants to do this simple activity. "What's one thing that you've been putting off?" And in the spirit of Draw Something, I asked them to draw it!

Looks like the guys at Logorama is brewing something...

Ms. Hannah, is that a hotel? Hope you can invite us when it opens.

Francis, are you sure about this? We will be first in line when you give away that money!

Alright, it's time to tell someone about it. Go ahead, don't be shy!

Jim and Marvin

Kevin and Ms. Barbie

Ms. Hannah and Ms. Carmen

Everyone seems to enjoy what the others have to say. So, I called for volunteers, "Who wants to share what you're about to Start?"

MoneySwap Marketing Manager Ms. May Shelle told us about "Gadgets Unlimited," an exciting project she's working on. (Ma'am discount ha!)

Krizia wants to become a motivational speaker someday. After hearing her, I'm convinced that she will be one ... maybe sooner than she thinks!

Now, before Adrian becomes a best-selling author, I suggest for you to take advantage of his writing now, visit his blog... Seeker's Portal.

The best is yet to come. I asked three of my friends to tell their story on "How they Started Something"

Malvin Dinlasan told us how he is now living the exciting life. (now a social media consultant)

He concluded with this, "The ACHIEVERS created the bags of chips and television that the SETTLERS munch and watch TV shows all day." (Another memorable quote from him would be something related to "Boy Bawang.") Read Malvin's take here.

This proves that you don't have to be a motivational speaker to inspire people. Rochelle, the blogger behind Hearty's Haven told us her story.

She works for a multinational company. Her boss told her that she needs to improve her writing skills. Instead of being discouraged, she took it as a challenge and decided to start a blog to improve her writing.

She didn't even expect people to read it. Today, Rochelle's blog has 60,000 visits per month. Now, she enjoys writing and meeting new people. Rochelle made us realize that even our weaknesses can become our strengths if we are willing to work at it! (read Rochelle's take here)

Cornel Bongco tells his story on how he started using his Yoyo to share a life-changing message. This unique idea has allowed him to speak to different groups of people and has brought him to many places. (local and international)

We all enjoyed his story, especially when he was talking about the mysterious "kwan!"

It was a fun afternoon.

Maybe more fun than you would think...

Even this guy is thinking ... "Hmmm what business should I start?"

You're never too young or too old to learn!

This young lady told her brother the next day, "Kuya, before you start anything, decide to finish it!" (A point I made during the presentation)

I continued with "How to Achieve Major, Major Goals" and shared the story on how my book idea came to life. "To write a book, learn how to write one page a day."

That's my pretty wife wearing fuchs... What's the spelling again? Ok, pink na lang daw. Alongside our good friends, Kat, Rudyard and Sol, my brother-in-law.

Mr. Buddy wrote a dedication for me. See the left side of the book.

The next two books I signed was addressed to the two Ronalds of Red Ribbon. To avoid confusion, which book belongs to whom, I wrote the same dedication! (Ayos ba, Nalds?)

Nice to meet you, "Ms. Nyc". Yup, that's her name.

It was fun working with Cornel, Rochelle and Malvin. Hindi kompleto 'pag walang group shot. (Sorry, we didn't do any jump shot.)

Special thanks to May (my editor) and Ms. Shawie for helping us during the event! Big thank you to Maan Villanueva for taking our photos!

This was held last June 8, 2012. The Forum, 4th Level of FullyBooked Bonifacio High Street in Taguig City.

We are excited to see our participants start their something. Hope you can join us next time!

Let's Start Something!

Lessons from Kodak, Beepers and Continuous Change

Using the Easy Call paging service wasn't as easy as you would think. Telling an operator to say sorry for you is humiliating. (Dyahe!) Not only that it is hard to dictate an apology to someone you don’t know, the agent seems to always take on a sleepy (bedroom) voice every time you call.

Operator:
Easy call Pager Number 141-14344. Your name please? (male bedroom voice)

You: Jhun.

Operator: Is that Juliet, Uniform, November? (confirming)

You: No, Ju-hun, with an 'H'.

Operator: Message please.

You: Ummmm... I'm sorry na...

Operator: [typing sound] Is there anything else?

You: Ummm...Yes. Umm... I won't do it again? (hesitant, but you continue anyway) Ikaw kasi eh, kung di mo lang ginawa yun...

After dictating your insincere apology, you still end up with the four words you should've said, “Please call me now” or "Turn on your cellphone, I will call you." (During that era, to conserve the 2-hour battery life of cell phones, people only turn it on when someone beeped them.)

In the mid-90s, Globe introduced a better way to communicate – via text messages. (Post star-tac era) The idea that you can send messages without calling an operator was a big relief.

Today, try to design a beeper with state-of-the-art features, sell it at the cheapest price possible, then add extra functionality, still, no one will buy it.

It's simply obsolete.

Somehow, there's a tendency for us to think that if we offer something that's cheaper, bigger, better or with more features of the same-old-boring-product, we will succeed. (Big–Sameness)

Take Kodak for example. They filed their bankruptcy just today. (1/20/12) Even though they were an early pioneer of digital photography, (they had the patents and expertise) they chose to hold on (too long) to their film business. (old success) Obviously, that didn't do them well.

To succeed in business today requires :
1. The willingness to let go of what worked yesterday.
2. The ability to make quick decisions.
3. The courage to embrace change.

Get rid of the old ideas that you've heard from your non-practicing professors.

The world has changed.

Keep your core values and principles, but when it comes to doing things, consider new ways. Adapt to new technologies. Better yet, create it.

Don't wait for your competitor to come up with a category-killer. Instead, make your own product obsolete by building the next big thing.
