WORK & REST

Give your best at work. Do more than what is required. Make people (customers or stakeholders) happy.

But right after that, draw a line and set your boundaries. Get some rest, invest your time with your family, or make time for your health. Don't let "anxious toil" drive your everyday life. 

Yes, there will always be more work to do tomorrow. But God also gives rest to his loved ones and faithfully provides even when you are asleep. 

Let go of your guilt – take your rest. Tomorrow, you'll get a new day to give your best.

10 WAYS TO HONOR GOD AT WORK

1. Be thankful for the work that you do. 
You may not have the job or business that you were hoping for. At least, not yet. But could it be that God is still preparing you?

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18


2. Be constructive, and don't be a "complainer." 
We are all in the business (or jobs) of solving problems. Instead, always think or offer, "How can I help?"

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:16

3. Work as if it was "God's business." 
• Arrive on time for work. If you can't be on time, be 10 minutes early. Time and effort translate into results. Be faithful with how you spend every minute or every resource.

• Unless you were hired as a social media manager, limit your social media use during work hours. Focus on the work at hand. See Pr. 28:19 

• When God examines your resume, you want him to read "faithful even with the little." That automatically qualifies you to a promotion.


4. Respect your bosses, that is grace at work.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear – Ephesians 4:29


5.  Always be fair, if not, be generous. 
Be ready to give more than what is required. See: Proverbs 11:1


6. Maintain healthy relationships with the opposite sex. 
Be careful, be considerate and be respectful. See: 1 Cor 7:2


7. Choose to do what is right, over what is the popular. 
Live and practice what you've learned from the bible.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Rom 12:2


8. Develop your skill-set. 
Prepare, because God will open bigger doors for you.

Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men – Proverbs 22:29


9. Extend the opportunities to others. 
You are blessed, so be a blessing. And then, later on, you might just see them bless others as well.

Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that hey may have something to share with anyone in need. – Ephesians 4:28


10. Share the Gospel. 
As they see how you live, tell others about the amazing things the LORD has done for you!

Living Your Second Wind

Last Saturday, we concluded our "Jumpstart Your Success" Workshop @ The FORT BGC.

After the learning session, I had the privilege to meet Cathy. She asked me to sign her copy of my book and was thanking us, the speakers, for the inspiring event.

She said that she wrote something down that she would like to read to me.

"You have awakened my soul… 

My passions... 

Adrenalin rush is pumping...
I want to live more and I don't want to lose my second wind…
To act…
To implement…
To be in the now…"

And then she smiled and told me, "I'm 7 years old." (which I didn't understand immediately)

Until she told me that she is a cancer survivor. She stayed for a while and shared to us her story.

I left the venue that night touched and more inspired by her.

Thank you Ms. Cathy for showing us how to be courageous and for reminding us to live fully.

TWO WORDS FOR A BLESSED YEAR

1. SEEK 
"Seek" is a proactive word. It means to "attempt to find" or "to attempt to obtain or achieve."

Many times we don't seek (or attempt) because we are afraid that we won't find anything. 

The good news is that if you seek, you will find. But you have to look in the right direction. Contrary to many beliefs, we are not in control of our own lives. We need to seek the One who is. 

We may not even know what's best for us, but God surely knows. 


2. RESPOND
Many people make a 'wish list' and hope that their dreams/goals in life will just come to pass. That's hardly how things work. God isn't a genie in a lamp.

You need to respond to His will. It may be risky. It may look impossible. It may not even make sense. But with faith, you can believe. 

But don't stop there. You'll also need to take action. You need to believe not only that He will grant favor upon you, but that He will also enable you. (No matter how challenging the task seems.)

Stop waiting and start seeking. 

Don't worry, you'll know it when it's time to respond.

You may think that you don't have a choice, but you do.

The real question is this, "Are you willing to take a risk?" 

When you play it safe, your options become limited. (or you might even run out of options)

The great men in the bible like David, Moses or Daniel, (or even in history) accomplished big things, not because they weighed the options, but because they took bold steps that weren't even an option in the first place.

ON BEING A FATHER

A quote says, "There are three stages of a man's life:  He believes in Santa Claus, he doesn't believe in Santa Claus, he is Santa Claus." 

We find this funny! And yes, admittedly, as Fathers, sometimes we feel that we are Santa Clause! 

While providing for our family is a big role, there are also other roles we ought to play. As a dad, I am…

…a PLAYMATE to my 6-year old son. Every night, Jaden would ask me, "Dad, can you play Tekken-6 with me?" I'd intentionally let him win the game from time to time. (Don't tell him!)

…a TEACHER/ENCOURAGER to my 9-year old son. Russel loves to sing. And every time I hear him, I'd say, "Wow Russ, you really sing well!"

…a COACH/ADVISER to my 13-year old son. Trey is now a teenager. I can't and shouldn't treat him the same way I treat his brothers. Over the years, I've seen him grow wiser. He is now capable of making decisions on his own. My role now as a father is to guide/coach him to make the right choices.

1. The first step is "to make a connection." They'll be eager to listen to you when they know that you're in tune with them. 

2. Teach them the important lessons in life. Before you do this, don't forget #1. 

As a father, the most important lesson for my children is this, "The only way to enjoy your life is to fear the Lord." (see Deut. 6:2) And the best way for me to teach this is to model it myself.

TWO THINGS MANNY PACQUIAO WON

In his fight with Tim Bradley, Manny Pacquiao may have deserved that belt, but he gained more.

After watching how Manny accepted the judges' decision with grace and self-control, he has earned our respect and admiration.

1. RESPECT

Manny says, "Let's give credit to Bradley. He did well tonight, I respect him, and that's the decision. I respect the officials. … It's part of the game, I give thanks to the Lord."

Manny knew he should've won and yet, he chose to be a gentleman. He could've been mad at the judges or could have blamed someone else. Instead, he gave Bradley his "time to shine" (it didn't last long though) For that, Manny, you've earned our respect. 

2. ADMIRATION

As a Christian, it's easy to question God and say, "Why God?!?" Yet, you see a man who is humble before the Lord. Even after a questionable defeat he says, "I give thanks to the Lord." 

It's easy to thank God when you're winning. But to thank the Lord at all times? (in this case, losing) That's always easier said than done! 

And yet, he did.  

I believe that his renewed faith gave him security. He knows that he is not just a title holder – there's more into his identity.

I'm excited to see what's next in the life of this champion.
