EVEN IF YOU GET OUT OF THE RAT RACE

Here's a funny saying I've heard recently, "Even if you get out of the Rat Race, there's a chance that you're still a rat!"

I agree. We should all strive to achieve financial freedom. Leaving an inheritance to our children is a good thing.

And many people start with that intention. But along the way, somehow, many have been derailed. Not realizing they are already running a different race – the race to get more, to get ahead or even to get even.

Financial freedom? Yes. But do it for the right reasons.

Engage in pursuits that will not only make you rich, but will enrich you as a person – something that will be of service to others or the people closest to you.

You don't want to get out of the rat race and still feel like a rat!

To get an idea where to begin, I hope you'll get a copy of my newest book, START SOMETHING. It's now available at National Bookstore and Powerbooks Branches.

WHY AREN'T YOU WORKING?

"Why aren't you working?"

If you tend to work only when the boss is looking, be honest with yourself, you're not only wasting your company's time, but most importantly, your own time.

Every single day at work counts. Everyday, you have the chance to create, to get better at what you do, or to make a difference even in a little way.

If this isn't what you're doing at work, then what are you doing?

Every work is designed to fill a need or to create some form of value for someone.

Work is going to be a big part of your entire life. And if you're going to spend a lot of time working, you might as well do something that's exciting enough – you'll be glad and happy to do it on your own.

WHY DID I WRITE THIS BOOK?

Why did I write this book?

You've already seen other Pinoys excel in different fields. Whether it's in sports, in the arts, or in business, you know that we really have what it takes to succeed.

But no matter how talented most of us are, there are still many things that's stopping us from starting (or succeeding) in our chosen field.

I wrote START SOMETHING to help you overcome those challenges (or excuses) that has been keeping you from starting.

You don't have to waste your time sitting and waiting. You may already have what it takes to make things happen.

~

Join me this Friday, May 31, 2013, for the START SOMETHING Book Launch in Powerbooks Greenbelt 4, Makati. 5:30pm–8:00pm. I'll be sharing a few tips on how you can start the work that you've been thinking about.

If you're free to come, simply fill out this FORM

Many thanks!

HOW TO CREATE VALUE

To create value, the first step is to find out what is important to people.

Facebook realized how important it is for people to be able to share their own thoughts and experiences. That's probably how they came up with the "Newsfeed" where everyone sees what's happening.

While other real estate developers were scrimping on building materials, DMCI created value by building resort-like communities in places you wouldn't expect.

Marielle Fong of Balikbayan Gears noticed that our famous Balikbayan Box looks unpresentable and lacks durability. She solved that problem by giving it a jacket or a cover that made it stylish and durable at the same time.

We create little value when we just replicate what everyone else (or every organization) is doing.

To create value, start to fill the needs that other companies are just ignoring, solve the problems that others wouldn't dare touch, or offer something that's unique enough – people will want to be the first ones to buy.

DON'T JUST SELL MORE BUT SERVE MORE

The tendency of a 'traditional sales person' is to coerce you into buying more than what you really need, into something more expensive, or into a product that's more profitable for them. This is a technique known as upselling.

That push doesn't always lead to customer satisfaction, but often times bring distrusts.

Instead of pushing to get more, why not give or serve more?

The best way to build your business is through generosity. Your customers will return the favor by giving you their loyalty.

Shift your sales mindset from "upselling" to "upserving."

THANKS FOR JOINING HEART AT WORK

Yesterday, we had a great time during the "Heart at Work" Seminar. We've learned a lot from Six Seconds EQ Coach Mr. Bernard Marquez on how our emotions play a big part in productivity and work satisfaction.

Photo Taken from Heart@Work May 17, 2013 – Next run coming soon!

I had the chance to chat with two interesting people too. Joey is a young IT professional who I believe will stumble on something interesting soon. And Ms. Michelle, a teacher by heart, who is currently learning how to operate the construction supply business that her husband started 10 years ago.

What I appreciate is the fact that both of them are eager to improve and grow in what they do. I get encouraged whenever I meet people like them.

We'd like to thank everyone who attended the workshop yesterday. May your quest for learning bring you success.

Our next learning session will be an interesting one entitled "WIN in Your First 30 Days in Sales: Sales Lessons for Non-Sales People." This will be on June 14. If you've been thinking of starting a sales career, but have no clue where to start, this learning session is perfect for you.

See details HERE.

GUARD YOUR HEART

How you feel about your work (and life) will influence the quality of your output or your performance. That's why when we feel down, stressed, or overwhelmed, it affects our work.

The good book says "The heart is deceitful above all things..." (Jer 17:9) This is probably the reason why we buy stuff we already know we can't afford or don't really need – simply because we feel like buying it.

We all tend to make "emotional choices" all the time – instead of logical ones.

But here's the most important part…

The heart is also the "well spring of life." When our heart is in the right condition, you can expect good things to flow from it.

Guard your heart at all times for this will determine your future or where you're headed.

Don't just 'do your work' for the sake of doing it. How we feel about our work, ourselves and our life matters a lot.

This coming May 17, my good friend (one of the people I look up to) who is a Certified EQ Coach, Mr. Bernard Marquez, will conduct a seminar or a workshop entitled "HEART at WORK" This is going to be a fun learning session. If you attend, you'll hear more about what I've written in here.

You can check out the details here: HEART at WORK

WHEN YOU STOP LEARNING

People stop learning the moment they decide they already know what they need to know. That decision often leads to a plateau.

Don't worry. All of us are prone to think this way.

The next time you tell yourself "I know that already" or  you're acting as if you know it all – consider it as a sign to give yourself a push to 'restart' your learning.

PESO SAVED. PESO EARNED.

It's good to aim for a bigger income. But there are also times that the solution to your problem is not just to build a bigger business, to ask for a higher salary, or to sell more.

The solution may also be to keep more (and spend less) of what you already earned.

I suggest, do both.

OWN IT AND HONE IT

"Either you have it or you don't.

Whether it's in singing, in sports, or in business, that's how most people look at their own capability. As if it's a yes or no proposition.

There's a tendency for us to walk away from our giftings simply because we think that we don't have it in us.

Yes, you have certain skills that are obvious. But you may also have a hidden gifting that is disguised as a mere potential

We fail to see it because it's still raw and needs a lot of work.

Oftentimes, honing this potential is the key to open up new opportunities.

If you think you have one, own it and then hone it.

What's that thing that you can develop?
