Why The Rich Get Richer

The rich get richer not because they're already rich, but because, somehow, they've figured out what worked for them to produce wealth.

Each one of us has been given that same ability. The ability to create value, to make a difference, or to do something that people would appreciate and pay for.

JK Rowling found it in her writing. She was a struggling single mother, but she didn't make that an excuse not to write Harry Potter. That led her to write a series of best-sellers.

Michael Dell figured it out when he started poking around and assembling computers in his college dormitory. That led him to build Dell Computer – a company that's now in the Fortune 500 list.

Tony Tan Caktiong found it decades ago when he converted his ice cream parlor into a fast-food outlet – offering burgers that satisfied the Pinoy taste. He named his company Jollibee.

Up to today, they haven't reinvented the wheel. They simply acquired other food brands like Greenwich, Chowking, Burger King and Mang Inasal. And yes, maybe they operate these brands better. But the point is – they've figured out what worked for them.

To find out what works for you, you'll have to start somewhere. But don't look too far, because anywhere is a good place to start.

Your 'first idea' (job, business, project) may not work, but it can lead you to another one that works well – just like that ice cream parlor that led to become one of the most successful brands in the Philippines.

What's working for you? Have you found it? If not, keep looking. Make the first move. Start.

Sooner or later, you'll figure it out.

The Workable & The Impossible

Earlier today, I just finished my 25th one-on-one training session with my fitness coach.

I never thought I'd last this long.

For the last 15 years, I've stayed away from anything that had to do with physical fitness. The heavy lifting I did was limited to the Macbook Air that I carried with me everyday.

Due to health reasons, I decided to get in shape.

I started last December 2012. Every morning, I'd go to the gym near where I live. I already considered 10 minutes on the treadmill a big achievement for me at that time.

I also began to change what I ate.

Two months later, I was able to see substantial results. But there was a problem: We were scheduled to go to the US for almost a month – A perfect excuse to eat whatever I wanted! "Enjoy the trip" as my friends would say.

But I thought that if I'd take a break from my discipline, I'd lose my momentum. So I continued anyway regardless of where I was.

That's me and my wife crossing the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco – a total of 5.4km. We'd wake up extra early just to go jogging. (San Francisco, LA and San Diego)

We went running even if it was snowing!  (Lake Tahoe)

After almost a month in the US and several In-N-Out burgers, I still managed to lose a pound when I got back in Manila.

Today, I've lost a total of 45 lbs. within a six month period. I'm in better shape than ever.

I never thought I'd get this far.

Some people will tell you to "just do the workable." The problem with that advice is that you don't know what's workable until you start doing whatever it is that you want to achieve.

Sometimes, all you need to do is to simply start. Then, who knows? It might lead you to do, not only the workable, but even what seems impossible.

P.S. So what else did I do to lose 45 lbs? (Warning: shameless plugging coming up) Please get a copy of my new book, Start Something. You can find the answer on page 85! Or you can ask me personally if you'll attend my next talk/event this coming July 12. See details Here!

DON'T PUT YOUR MONEY IN A BUSINESS THAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND

Many people are in search of a "lucrative business." They assume that if other people are making money from it, they'll do too.

Before putting up a business, consider what Warren Buffet (the 2nd richest man on the planet) has to say:

Don't be too quick to let go of your money simply because an investment "sounds good." And don't just turn your back either without studying it, or you'll end up to be close-minded – you won't be able to find anything to start.

If you don't know how a business works, then research and learn about it. Better yet, try to test the market or get a pulse by talking to prospective customers, suppliers, or to the people who've been in the industry long enough.

Pessimism will hold you back. Optimism is good, but don't forget to do your homework.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS FUN BUT NOT EASY

Many people go into entrepreneurship because they think they'll earn more money and have more free time.

Yes, that is true in the long-run, but don't expect to start that way.

While you're starting, it will be time-consuming. There will be days that you will feel demotivated. And it will require a lot of trial-and-error.

Don't go into entrepreneurship simply because you're expecting it to be easier than what you are doing right now. Entrepreneurship is fun, but it's not easy.

You need to be focused, consistent and faithfully stubborn to build a sustainable business.

But if you are willing to do the inconvenient, to let go of the excuses, and to work on it, you will enjoy the ride and might just succeed beyond your expectations.

START-UP GROUP MEET UP

A lot of people are 'marksmen' when it comes to shooting down other people's ideas. They'll make a career out of it. And sometimes, we even fail to get the support of the people closest to us.

No wonder many of us hesitate to start.

If you've been contemplating on starting, but couldn't because of this reason, please allow me to invite you...

Every week, I'll be organizing a small group (4–6 people only) of Start-up Entrepreneurs. In the meeting, you can freely talk about the project or the business that you've been planning to start. The purpose of the meet-up is to exchange ideas. So we can all learn from each other.

The meet up is free of charge. Just bring money for your coffee.

All I'll ask is a small favor, get a copy of the START SOMETHING book (at Powerbooks or National Bookstore) then start reading it. That should give you a head start. By reading it, you might just get the answers to your initial questions.

Then let's coordinate and meet up to discuss the opportunity, business, or project that you've been thinking about.

Up to it? Sign-up below!

Update: Next meet-up will be on September 23, Monday 6pm–8pm at Starbucks 4th Level in SM Megamall. This specific meet up is ideal for bloggers, aspiring authors or speakers.

Please let us know on the "Leave a message..." portion below if you're joining this meeting. Thanks!
